Godox, which is rebranded under several names, the biggest being Flashpoint under Adorama, has announced a very interesting medium wattage flash gun, the eVOLV 200 TTL. I’m currently an owner of 2 Flashpoint XPLOR 600 strobes, and the eVOLV 200 TTL has me really excited.
The eVOLV 200 TTL looks to be about the size of a pocket strobe, but is powered by a lithium-ion battery, and provides 200WS of power, roughly 3-4 times that of a traditional speedlight. I could see this coming in handy in a few ways. First, I don’t always want to lug around the XPLOR 600, but many times a regular speedlight doesn’t offer enough power. The eVOLV 200 TTL could get me enough power to slightly overpower the sun without the added weight in my pack. If you’re a photographer who hikes to remote locations, having to bring an extra pack for lighting makes the trip that much harder, but being able to get this much power in a small form factor could make all the difference to you. The eVOLV 200 TTL comes with both a fresnel head and also with a bare bulb head, probably better for mounting softboxes or beauty dishes to the light in order to get better spread. Having 2 options could be a cool feature, and just give you more options when shooting.
